Play Therapy

“Play is the child’s language and toys are their words.” Lambreth

Play Therapy is based upon the fact that play is the child’s natural medium of self-expression it offers an opportunity for the child to ‘play’ out their feelings and problems, just as an adult talk about theirs.

Play therapy is a mode of therapy that helps the child understand upsetting feelings or painful experiences. As play is the child’s natural form of expression, it allows them to communicate at their own level without having to put problems into words, particularly the ones that may feel uncomfortable such as anger, sadness, anxiety and frustration.

Gemma uses a number of different treatment methods, all applying the therapeutic benefits of play. Play therapy differs from regular play in that the therapist helps children to address and resolve their own difficulties. A large body of research supports the effectiveness of Play Therapy with children experiencing a wide variety of social, emotional, behavioural, and learning problems.

A playful mind thrives on ambiguity, complexity, and improvisation, the very things needed to develop and maintain creative solutions and strategies in today’s world.
